Preventing Oral Health Problems

Lifetime’s goal is to establish healthy habits that will promote improved oral health, which will impact the systemic health of our patients. For patients with physical or mental impairment, even routine dental hygiene can become difficult. We tailor our services to meet the needs of each patient and facility. We strive to establish a path to restore optimal oral health. Once we have improved the patients oral health, preventive treatments include oral hygiene instruction, cleanings, and exams.

Dental Exams and Cleanings

The American Dental Association, along with the State of Texas recommend that patients in long-term care facilities have their teeth cleaned once every three to six months depending on their needs. During these cleanings, our providers will thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of their teeth to clear away harmful oral bacteria to prevent tooth loss.

Dental checkups are recommended two to four times a year for elderly patients in long-term care facilities, especially since there is difficulty maintaining optimal oral hygiene as we get older. Our team will thoroughly examine the patient’s mouth, review medical history, and capture photos in order to diagnose and treat any oral issues before they get worse.

Oral Cancer Screening

During each assessment and checkup, we’ll perform an oral cancer screening. Our goal is to spot the early signs of this disease before it has a chance to spread to other areas of the body, making it easier to treat. If we do find anything that could indicate cancer or pre-cancer, we will refer through the proper channels.
